The spy and the traitor book5/28/2023 Whereas Philby was ideologically committed to communism before he joined MI6, and infiltrated the spy agency so as to betray it, Gordievsky became enamoured of the west when he was already on the inside. It is tempting to see him as a sort of mirror image of Philby, but there is one crucial difference. Bright and studious, he won a place at the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations – the “Soviet Harvard” – and it was almost inevitable that he would end up in the Soviet Union’s most elite corps: the first chief directorate, the KGB division responsible for spying on foreigners, rather than harassing Jews, Baptists and free thinkers at home. Born in 1938, just as the great terror was winding down, his father was a secret policeman and his older brother became one too. In fact, it feels a little like he has been waiting all the time to tell us about Gordievsky, since this story is so much bigger than those he has told before. Those books were good, but this one’s better. Over the past decade, from his breakout success with Agent Zigzag to his biography of Kim Philby, A Spy Among Friends, Macintyre has built an entirely justified reputation for his true spy thrillers. His story has been told before, not least by himself in the autobiography he wrote in retirement in Britain, but it has found its ideal chronicler in this exceptionally rewarding book by Ben Macintyre.

Hades and persephone amelia wilde5/28/2023 I love "meeting" new authors, and while I've read Amelia Wilde when she and Skye Warren penned a previous book, getting to experience her writing on its own has been a rewarding experience. This book was exceedingly more than I could have hoped for. He's cold and cruel, but maybe all he's needed is the love and warmth that Persephone can bring him. Luther Hades is the very kind of man her mother told her about. She desperately wants her freedom, but even as she begins to break free of her mother's dictatorial ways, she's captured by her family's sworn enemy. Here, Persephone is a young woman who has been sheltered from the world, raised to believe that evil will befall her in the company of men. King of Shadows is the first novel in Wilde's new series inspired by the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades. Well, my curiosity was absolutely piqued, so when the opportunity to read and review her upcoming release came along, I knew this was my chance to discover her writing as a solo author. My introduction to Amelia Wilde's writing was by way of Audition, co-written with Skye Warren, who happens to be one of my favorite go-to authors. The overstory netflix5/27/2023 Alexander Woo (former writer on True Blood) also serves as a co-creator, executive producer and writer for the series. They will also be joined by Jovan Adepo ( When They See Us), Eiza Gonzalez ( Baby Driver), Jess Hong ( Inked: The Brokenwood Mysteries), Sea Shimooka ( Arrow), and more. CAIRO Egypt has accused Netflix of misrepresenting history by casting a Black woman to play Cleopatra, its most famous historical figure, in a new series. Others who have been cast alongside them include Doctor Strange's Benedict Wong and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Tsai Chin. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. The two actors behind the popular GOT characters didn't exactly share a whole lot of screentime with each other on Game of Thrones, so it'll certainly be interesting to see. 'Queen Cleopatra,' the soon-to-be-released drama-documentary on the famed Egyptian queen. The stars who played those iconic characters, John Bradley and Liam Cummingham, respectively, have been officially cast, per Deadline. The Egyptian government has accused Netflix of misrepresenting Cleopatra by framing her as a Black woman. And apparently, the actors who played Samwell Tarly and Davos Seaworth are in the mix. It is an English-language adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth's Past, a sci-fi book trilogy about alien invasion and human survival. Martin’s Game of Thrones book-to-TV adaptation are seemingly giving a similar treatment to their new Netflix series, 3 Body Problem. The bloody, gruesome minds behind George R.R. Obsessive genius marie curie5/27/2023 The associated monetary prize, normally 70 000 gold francs for each awardee, was given in full to Becquerel while the Curies had to split 70 000 francs. Once the injustice was corrected, the prize was awarded to Henri Becquerel, Marie Curie, and her husband Pierre. But a member of the Nobel Prize committee objected to the omission and informed Pierre, who refused to accept the prize without the inclusion of Marie. For example, the official nominating letter for the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics cited the work of Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel while completely ignoring Marie’s contributions. Goldsmith has written several other books that examine women’s lives in the context of history, and her biography of Curie, set at the beginning of the 20th century, naturally includes many incidents of gender bias.
